Description:

This interactive presentation will compare past and present career pathways, drawing on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, setting SMART goals and lived experience.  Participants will identify their own goals, barriers and changes needed to achieve these. Following this activity, the presentation will address the considerable barriers faced by school leavers with additional learning needs, disability and neurodivergence to highlight how challenging change and transition can be for them and what support strategies can be put in place to improve opportunities and outcomes.

Presenter Bio:

Marilyn Garbin launched Can Do Training in February 2023 to cater for the needs of students with disability. In 2023, Marilyn ran “Soft Skills for School Leavers” 4-hour workshops for young adults with a disability transitioning from school. Parents and support workers were invited to attend the workshops at no cost to provide support. In 2024, Marilyn provided 40 x 4-hour workshops where she taught digital skills to school leavers with a disability (and their parents/support workers). Marilyn also provides a program called “Get That Job!”. This is a combination of both soft and digital skills and enables job seekers to obtain the insight and confidence to apply for the 80% of jobs in the “Hidden market”. Courses at Can Do Training are designed to support young people and their families through life transitions, offering job-ready skills in a nurturing and safe learning environment.
